OOC

«

Whether you feel it stands for Out of Camp, Out of Control, or even Off of (the) Charts, OOC is shorthand for our most intense level of program activity at Camp Hi-Sierra. You know when you're cooking from a recipe that tells you to use a tablespoon of something tasty, but you say "No way! I need WAY more than that!" - yeah, that's you, going O-O-C! Ooook! This stuff is WILD!

Programs marked with "OOC" as their Difficulty Level are not just difficult, they're strenuously difficult. These are difficult activities for individuals with considerable experience in the activity, and near-impossible activities for anyone lacking experience. A very real element of danger is present in these activities, and we must plan accordingly. Pre-Camp planning, preparation, and practice is a MUST. These activities are physically demanding, and those who appear to our staff unable to complete the activity safely will not be allowed to participate. Some might say OOC stands for Out of Character - because when you're on these adventures at Camp Hi-Sierra, you're doing things you never thought you could do!

Not surprisingly, the main program noted with an OOC Difficulty is the Hi-Sierra Trekking program.

At Camp Hi-Sierra, we use a concept known as Challenge by Choice to guide our activity choices, though there are times in OOC activities when the element of choice has been left behind - like when we passed that trailhead 5 miles back, and it won't be discovered again until we make it to that road, 3 miles ahead and 2,000 feet uphill! In other words, in OOC activities, we often have to choose our challenges in advance so that we do not find ourselves committed to a dangerous situation.
