Challenge by choice

«

Challenge by Choice is an idea that we use frequently at Camp Hi-Sierra, especially in our High Adventure programs.

Challenge by Choice starts with the belief that we all learn and grow by challenging ourselves and discovering (and perhaps surpassing) our own limits - but that intimidation, fear, and coercion inhibit that same growth. Each of us deserve a space to explore where we feel safe and secure.

Challenge by Choice asserts three major points:

  • Everyone should be able to set their own goals - different tasks hold different levels of challenge for each of us, and it's perfectly fine to say "I'm not ready to climb a 35-foot tower, but I think today I can push myself to climb the first half."
  • Everyone should be able to say when enough's enough for them. Our buddies may want us to keep trying, but it's important that everyone feels they can stop when they've reached the end of their comfort zone.
  • Last, everyone should have access to enough information to make good, informed choices about the challenges they approach: no one should be "tricked" or mislead into doing something that others want them to do.

Challenge by Choice is an officially encouraged component of BSA's COPE (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experiences) programs.
